If you love walking along streets that have a certain something about them, then Chinatown is for you. The historic neighbourhood, a witness of the endeavours of the first Chinese immigrants to the island, offers sights, culinary delights and a shopping experience like no other.
Change is inevitable. So the modern-day Chinatown is not entirely the one early Chinese immigrants to Mauritius brought to life. But that very fact is a testament to their spirit: merchants and traders who embraced change and opportunity, even as they kept alive their vibrant cultural identity.
Some corner shops and Mah-Jong houses have stood the test of time. Traditional restaurants also. Be it there or at the numerous food stalls lining the streets, you will find some of the culinary delights Mauritians rave about. The famous steamed vegetable or fish balls we call ‘boulettes’, the world renowned Peking duck and the hand-made candy will leave you wanting for more.
No doubt you’ll find a dish your taste buds won’t forget. And if you’ve over-indulged yourself and the tummy is screaming out for relief, don’t worry: there are plenty of shops around selling traditional Chinese medicine for whatever ailment you suffer from.
You should be back on your feet in no time, ready to head out into the side streets, where untold treasures await.
