Tips to fail-proof your trip

So you haven’t read up as much as you should have before embarking on your dream trip to Mauritius? Do not despair. Our cheat sheet of what to do, and not do, is here to save the day.

First up, the blazing sun. You’ll love it, but you probably won’t love the sunburns. Sunscreen is a must. To fight off the heat, keep yourself hydrated at all times. Tap water is safe to drink, but if your stomach is one to very easily churn, bottled water is readily available.

From January to March, Mauritius receives heavy rainfall and the occasional cyclone. Needless to say, wading around in rough seas or heading out for a walk on difficult, steep ground is not advisable.

Hiking lovers should bring along anti-mosquito cream, and beach bums should consider wearing beach shoes. They aren’t really in fashion, but they are way cooler than walking on a sea urchin…

Mauritius being a street food paradise, by all means, do try the cheap local specialities. It won’t hurt, however, if you take a look at the hygienic conditions for food preparation and storage. Having at hand any prescribed medicine against food allergies is also a good idea, though you probably won’t need it.

Oh, and beware fallen fruits: they look delicious, but the evil things will probably wreck your stomach…
