Maybe you came here for the beaches and the sun. Their appeal is real. But the true beating heart of Mauritius is to be found elsewhere: in its streets, its food and above all its people of different colours, origins and beliefs. My Moris invites you to meet them.
Mauritius is a land rich of traditions as diverse as the origins of its people. To give you a true taste of the island, My Moris, an all-women crew, has come up with a series of original, informative and fun experiences.
The idea arose from a conversation between two friends; Shakti Callykan and Maya de Salle-Essoo. The two worked on the project and My Moris was launched in July 2015.
“My Moris was born out of our shared passion for culture, history and Mauritian heritage. When we embarked on this adventure, it was important for us that we bring a positive contribution to a tourism which is both innovative and respectful of the local culture and environment,” says Shakti Callykan.
In keeping with that central idea, My Moris takes you beyond the beaches to live authentic cultural experiences while getting deeper insight into Mauritian history and the religions, languages, cuisines and craftsmanship of its people.
Getaways on foot or by bicycle will bring you to the different neighbourhoods of the capital, Port Louis, where you will discover the culinary specialities of each. You will also get to know the delicious recipes of Rosemonde, taste the roti, a Mauritian favourite bought at every street corner, dive into the world of the sega, the traditional music of Mauritius, wander around the grounds of what was once an old sugar estate and learn how to weave vacoas leaves into useful objects.
You’ll even have the opportunity to witness the everyday life of Mauritian families. Because, as
Shakti Callykan says, “at My Moris, we are convinced that the beauty of meeting people is well worth sharing!”
