In Rodrigues, Goodness Fits in a Jar

They may be small and quite plain-looking. But don’t be fooled by your eyes. Much like the island and the people that inhabit it, Rodrigues’ little jars of condiments will bring you joy. Whatever the dish, they will make it better.

You cannot miss them. They are everywhere. At the market in Port Mathurin or on the pavement of many villages, you will inevitably stumble upon the little jars of artisan condiments Rodrigues is known for. And normally, the woman who made them at home will be standing right behind the stall.

The flavours on offer are varied, but most have something to do with chillies. Octopus chilli, lemon chilli, mango chilli, fish chilli or tamarind chilli… all sorts of associations are possible with local products. A word of caution however: the chilli is as flavoursome as it is hot, so tread carefully.

Not too keen on the chilli? Worry not! There is still hope of finding a little jar to your liking. How about one with pickled vegetables or fruits? Or some tamarind or papaya jam? Or maybe your taste buds will tingle with pleasure when tasting the lemon-based sweet and sour sauce. Among the many offerings, you will also find that 100 % natural Rodriguan honey is a real treat.

Whatever the choice, you will be bringing back home the best that Rodrigues can get to fit in a little jar.

Humble Beginnings

Before becoming a hit with both locals and tourists alike, the little jars of condiments were a way – sometimes the only way – to preserve food. The reaction of visitors to the island, who got to taste the condiments, ended up convincing the locals that the taste was one that people would pay for. Nowadays, the little jars are a significant source of income for many families.
