Historic Marine: Scale Models never looked so Genuine

Getting local know-how to shine well beyond Mauritian waters. Such has been Historic Marine’s mission since 1982. The team of talented artisans, in their workshop in the village of Goodlands, handcraft wooden scale models of famous boats. The world-renowned workshop’s pieces are sold to Mauritians and tourists, but also shipyards, cruise lines, museums and foreign collectors, who order tailor-made models of the ships of their choice.

To help showcase the know-how of Mauritian artisans, Historic Marine opens the doors of its workshop to the public. Visits are possible until 17.00 on weekdays, and until noon on week-ends.

Greeted by the unmistakable smell of wood being chiseled away by the more than 30 artisans working at their art, you will then be given a step by step insight into the processes which give birth to the workshop’s artful scale models. You could sit there for ever, watching the master craftsmen and their seemingly unfailing concentration and attention to detail. Or you could exchange a few words with one of them.

During your visit, you will also be introduced to Historic Marine’s collection. Displayed for sale, the flotilla is composed, at all times, of 150 pieces. Your guide, who has been on board the Historic Marine ship from its beginnings, will help navigate you through their discovery. No ship’s history or associated myth will remain a secret!

Some models of legendary ships are available in different sizes. Among these are historical frigates, passenger liners like the Titanic, classic and modern racing yachts, the famous Rivas and other motor-boats, and even imaginary boats like Tintin’s Aurore or the Black Pearl of Pirates of the Caribbean. Prices vary according to the size of the scale model and the quality of finish. With Historic Marine, you can also order a tailor-made scale model of your own boat. Since they first went on sale, Historic Marine’s scale models have attracted many well-known clients.
