If you’ve ever felt there is a wild beast in you just waiting to come out, now is your chance! Join the lions, tigers and cheetahs for a walk and more at Safari Adventures.
Their names might not sound local. But Pafuri, Matetsi, Zambuk, Nandi, Tuli and Sarabi were all born in Mauritius, under the watchful eye of the Safari Adventures team. The lion cubs are among the more than thirty big cats the keepers take care of.
Today is a big day for the little ones. “Outside of our staff, they are meeting people for the first time,” says Georgie Bristow, head of marketing, publicity and events.
Indeed, as soon as we step into their enclosure, we can see they are intrigued. What’s that smell? And the noise!
Novelty aside, isn’t the experience a tad stressful for the cubs? “They won’t be here long,” says Georgie. A few hours at most, before going back to their mum by midday.
A bit further away, the adults – lionesses and a young male – are finding some joy in the shade of the trees. “Lions are somewhat lazy during the day. We don’t push them to do anything. Our guides are trained to recognize the mood the lions are in. Interactions will depend on that,” explains our guide.
We seem to be in luck, as the big cats, we are told, are in a good mood. Still, meeting with the majestic creatures has us a bit uncertain, despite the clear instructions we are given. Adrenalin coursing through our veins, we start petting a magnificent lioness. She doesn’t seem to mind.
Still glowing from the experience, we head over, to end the day, to the cheetahs. Kalahari and Masai stare at us as we get close. Their purring is impressive. Their gaze an intense fire we cannot escape…
