Takamaka Winery Boutique: Uncorking the best of Mauritius

Ever since it opened last November, Takamaka Winery Boutique has been serving traditional know-how and innovation in a bottle. Character and local flavours shine through its wines. We know, coz we tasted…

The place, like the wines it gives birth to, is full of warmth. Takamaka Winery Boutique is both rustic and modern. All tradition and all change.

The director, oenologist Alexander Oxenham, hails from a line of winemakers. With Takamaka Winery Boutique, he has created a line of craft gastronomic wines made from litchis grown in the North of the island: Apérichy, Aquarel, Eclipse and the soon to be Icône.

Takamaka Boutique Winery is based on three key words: origin, originality and authenticity.

“The concept is new to Mauritius. Our wines are made from local products, are litchi-based, and they are authentic in that we do not mass-produce commercial wines,” Alexander Oxenham says.

Why litchi, we hear you ask? For the simple reason grapes do not grow in Mauritius and litchi, which does, has a whole range of flavours which lend themselves well to the winemaking process. Like the oenologist says, nature does wonderful things.

If you decide to visit, you’ll witness the sorting and stoning of litchis and see the main room, where the fermentation, clarification and filtration tanks are found.

And to end on a high note, you’ll get to taste some of the wines on offer.

Doing it green!

Takamaka Winery Boutique uses rain water it collects to wash its tanks after the fermentation process. The water is then recovered to be used in the orchards. Litchi residues are also composted.
