The History of Mauritius is intimately linked to the production of sugar. To get a sense of how the art has evolved over the centuries, head over to L’Aventure du Sucre. The factory turned museum is an ode to all things sugarcane.
There was something new under the sun when, in 2002, L’Aventure du Sucre (the adventure of sugar), opened its doors in the North. Amid the sugarcane fields, the old sugar factory of Beau Plan now tells the story of a centuries-old industry. The museum’s displays are interactive, with visual and audio support in both English and French.
The “cathedral of sugar”, the heart of the factory, houses the heavy machinery which turned sugar cane into fine sugar. The unmistakable smell of which will be present throughout your visit. As for the temporary exposition Regards from Mauritius, it is well worth a look.
A highlight of any visit is the tasting of sugar, jam, honey and rum. “This is the only place in the world where you can taste twelve different types of brown sugar,” says Communication Director Sandrine Marrier d’Unienville.
No tour would be complete without a stop at the Boutique du Village (village shop), where you will find the souvenir you want among the creations of local craftsmen.
Le Fangourin
If the visit literally left you hungry for more, Le Fangourin restaurant offers a refined culinary experience. Mauritian and European cuisines feature prominently on the menu. Our favourite: the dark chocolate fondant with molasses.
Mobile App
The tour, which lasts less than two hours, is tailored for both kids and adults. Visitors can download an app which allows them to access a free audio guide in five languages: German, Mandarin, Italian, Russian and Spanish.
