Tea making is an art form in itself. From the fields they grow in to your favourite cup, the leaves undergo a radical transformation. Come along as we visit the factory where Kuanfu Tea works its magic.
In Mauritius, it is never too hot to drink tea. That’s a good thing, because we are in Port Louis, on a sizzling summer day, to do just that. Shimla, our guide, leads the way to the Kuanfu Tea factory.
To witness the range of processes is quite a spectacle. As we wind our way between the grinders and ovens, we stumble upon employees sorting out tea leaves. And every step of the way, Shimla is feeding us information about what we are seeing.
The processes required to produce black and green teas differ, but they all serve the purpose of bringing out the best of the leaves. Black tea, for example, because of its high polyphenol content (32.5 %), helps reduce dysfunction in the coronary artery. It also relieves digestive disorders and has anti-inflammatory properties.
After the visit, which lasts some 20 minutes, we are treated to a tea ceremony. While she waits for the water to boil, Shimla explains that the ritual is an “exercise in precision”. For one, tradition dictates that tea is to be drunk in small porcelain cups.
If you want to experience it for yourself, just enter a Kuanfu Tea shop in one of the major shopping malls of the island. The tasting will be free… and one cup just won’t be enough!
