Black River Gorges: When Nature Calls…

Whether you are an avid hiker or you just need a big breath of fresh air, Mauritius has the open spaces you crave for. The only danger in heading out into our tropical forest is that you will be so awestruck that you might not want to come back out.

In the West of Mauritius lie 67 km² of unspoilt wilderness. The Black River Gorges National Park harbours the endemic tropical forest of Machabée/Bel Ombre. Designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO since 1977, it is home to 311 native flowering plant species and ten or so bird species, among them the white tailed tropicbird, the pink pigeon, the Mauritian kestrel and the echo parakeet.

The park, with its well-defined tracks, allows for groups to head out on their own, although hiring a guide is never a bad idea. The two main entry points are at Pétrin and Black River, where you will also find an information kiosk. The 60 km long main trail is more than enough to take in the best the park has to offer. There will be panoramic views from higher ground, magnificent waterfalls and slow moving rivers… You might even want to take a dip!

Those looking for something more challenging will turn their attention to the Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire. Standing at 828 metres, it is the island’s highest peak. If you choose to climb it, getting a guide is advisable.

Whichever way you go about it, strap those boots on and get out there.

Things to Remember

Before heading out, make sure you have your hiking clothes and boots on. Your backpack should hold food and water, a first aid kit, sunscreen, mosquito repellent and spare clothes. And once you’re out hiking, stay with others and keep your trash in a bag.
