Big Quest: Get Hooked on Big Game Fishing

Maybe you catch marlins for breakfast every day. Or maybe you are a novice, like we are, when it comes to Big Game Fishing. Either way, you’ll enjoy the day out with Blue Quest and its offering of sun, sea, delicious food and big, big fish!

The clock has barely hit 6.30 when we set foot in La Jetée Street, Black River. We are here to meet Jean-Noël Mamet, director of Big Quest, the company taking us out to sea for a day of Big Game Fishing. First up though: a hearty breakfast to help fuel us until lunch.

That done, we board the boat and we’re out to sea on the East Coast. The boat is manned by Captain Conrad, fishing master Max and his assistant Clovis. Also on board are Frenchmen Frédérick and Marcel, our companions for the day.

Max goes through the basic rules: “Nothing is guaranteed. We can come back empty-handed or with a boat loaded with fish. We could catch different kinds of fish, and maybe a marlin as a bonus!”

As the ship parts the waves at a speed of eight knots, we are ushered to the top bridge. Air circulation is better, which helps with sea sickness. The view, from there, is unobstructed as we strain our eyes looking for the birds whose presence is a telltale sign of the big fish.

Everything is set. All that is left to do is to wait for the first fish to bite. Luckily, we don’t have to wait too long. Frédérick is the first to try his hand at hauling in a big one. For 15 minutes, he sweats and tenses his muscles, but finally, the fish is in the boat. And guess what? It’s a marlin!

Before midday, each one of us can brag about having caught a fish. Time to head back to the lagoon to have lunch. Today’s menu is grilled chicken, fish and sausage, accompanied by salad and finished off with flambéed bananas. Needless to say, no food is wasted!

Around three in the afternoon, we’re back on land. Waves are still crashing around in our head. And on a hook, there’s a nice-sized barracuda which we, at Mozaik, can proudly say we caught ourselves…
