Get ready to lose your breath. Well, not literally. There is no risk of you blacking out as your human-sized submarine enters a realm of colours made of coral reefs, fish shoals, sea turtles, anemone… 35 metres below sea level. If luck is a friend of yours, you might even stumble upon dolphins, says Benjamin Turquois, Blue Safari’s director.
The company’s signature offer is a 2-hour affair, with 45 minutes spent beneath the seas. With more than 20 years’ experience and 40 000 dives since Blue Safari was founded by Luc Billard back in 1998, the team is well-drilled and the experience – unmatched in the Indian Ocean – is as smooth as possible.
While you are comfortably seated in an air-conditioned and secured cabin, your pilot will manoeuver the submarine down. He will also be your guide. Be sure to ask him about the Japanese trawler sunk in 1998 to assist in coral growth. And what about the 17th century sheet anchor which once belonged to a merchant ship? You might even fancy having lunch in this most unlikely of settings. The gastronomic meal served to you will taste all the better for it!
“You can even celebrate your wedding under water, together with your witnesses and an underwater cameraman. It can’t get much more original than that!” says Benjamin Turquois.
Freer in a Subscooter
Get even closer to the action with a subscooter. Its large dome will afford you unspoilt views as you dive to 3 metres beneath the waves. You can try the 30 minute dive alone or with your companion. Just remember that boarding takes place every day of the week, from 8.30 to 15.30 for the submarine dive, and from 9.00 to 15.00 for the subscooter.
