Beyond doubt, 2018 is a significant milestone for Mauritius as its people gear up to proudly celebrate the 50th anniversary of independence, and 26 years as a Republic. The Independence declared on 12th March 1968 remains the cornerstone of modern Mauritius, with challenges thereof triggering its people to embark on an exemplary Nation-building.
It was precisely this very determination which inspired our freedom fighters, fueled our poets and writers, like the author of our national anthem, Jean-Georges Prosper, whom we were honored to meet in the making of this issue. He shares with us how our national anthem was born out of the union between his two passions: politics and poetry.
Now 84 years of age, the man who wrote “As one people, as one Nation” is still committed to the upholding of the Mauritian identity that can transcend all ethnic & religious differences. An initiative which clearly symbolizes the passion, pride and prowess of our people.
